October 31st – a day full of candy and costumes, what’s not to love? Gone are the days when dressing up is just for kids, adults can do it too! But if you want to dress up during the day, you need to check that it is okay with your employer and make sure to wear a work-appropriate costume.

Should Halloween costumes be allowed at work?

From an employer’s perspective, that answer depends on your office environment. If clients are coming to the office or there are a lot of meetings that day, costumes are not a good idea. On the flip side, allowing employees to dress up will provide something new and fun to mix up the work environment (see The Importance of Having Fun at Work for more reasons why that is important). You could create a competition and give prizes for the best and the most creative costumes. There could also be an after work Halloween party or everyone could go to the local bar for happy hour. Halloween provides a chance to do something fun and bond together as an office.

Why scour the internet and Pinterest for ideas yourself? Check out these articles and Pinterest boards for work appropriate Halloween costumes. But keep in mind, if you are ever in doubt about the appropriateness of a costume, you shouldn’t wear it.

Halloween is an opportunity to relax a little and have some fun. Whether it is a costume competition or going to happy hour after work, do something different as a team this Halloween.
