"Is it just me, or is my computer getting noisier and more annoying?" you think to yourself one quiet morning. If your once nearly-silent computer is seemingly getting louder, it probably is the computer and not you imagining it. A computer fan that is always running is a sign that worse things are just around the corner.

The Diagnosis:

If you have a noisy fan and your computer is very hot, you probably have a case fan problem. A lot of dust in the case vents is a dead giveaway.

The Solution:

Turn off and unplug the computer. Then blow the dust out using a can of compressed air. If the vents are really dusty or filled with pet hair, you should open the case and blow the debris off the case fan, power supply fan and CPU fan.

Make sure you use canned air for electronics (static free). In addition, keep the fan fins in place when cleaning; don't let them spin. Lastly, be aware that any static charge can permanently damage your computer as well, so if possible wear an ESD device.
