Anthropic Claude is a genuinely remarkable business tool. It reasons, drafts, analyzes, and advises — and when it's working well inside an organisation, it feels less like software and more like a capable colleague who never sleeps. But none of that matters if your intellectual property, client data, or commercially sensitive information is inadvertently leaving your organisation every time someone types a prompt.
This is not a theoretical risk. It is how most AI tools work by default — and it is the first thing we address with every client before a single user logs in.
The right foundation: Claude Teams or Claude Enterprise
We only recommend two deployment paths for business use: Claude Teams and Claude Enterprise. Both include a critical guarantee that Pro does not: your data is not shared outside your organisation, it is not used to train the model, and it stays within a secured, managed environment.
This matters even when your team is using Claude through extensions like Claude in Excel or Claude in Chrome. Those tools feel lightweight and familiar — but they tie back to an underlying Claude account. That account is where the data boundary is set. If it isn't set up correctly, the extension inherits the same risks as any unsecured tool. Getting the account right is everything.
Think of Claude Teams as the secure foundation that every other Claude tool in your organisation sits on top of. Without it, you're building on sand.
A word of caution on Claude or ChatGPT Pro: If your staff are using personal Claude Pro or OpenAI ChatGPT subscriptions — even paid ones — your organisation's data may be used to train Anthropic's models and is not protected by enterprise data agreements. Pro is designed for individual use, not for handling proprietary business information. It is not a safe starting point for enterprise deployment.
Teams or Enterprise — which do you need?
This is one of the most common questions we get — and the answer is that most organisations should start with Teams. Here's how to think about it.
Claude Teams - Right for most organisations
- Per-seat pricing that is predictable and straightforward to budget. Each user gets a generous allocation of usage, and costs scale cleanly with headcount.
- Data is kept within your organisation. No model training on your inputs. Centralised admin and user management.
- Best suited to teams of any size who want secure, managed access to Claude across their workflows — without complexity or variable cost exposure.
Claude Enterprise - When you need more
- For regulated clients, high-volume usage, or complex deployments.
- The critical difference is that Enterprise will archive all chats, prompts, and Claude activity, which is required for our RIA clients and others with regulatory requirements.
- Enterprise moves to a shared token pool across your organisation rather than per-seat limits. This gives heavy users more flexibility — but costs can escalate quickly if usage isn't actively managed.
- Also includes custom system prompts, deeper API access, SSO, and the ability to integrate Claude into your own internal systems and products.
- Best suited to large organisations, technical teams building Claude into their own workflows, or businesses where a small number of power users would consistently hit Teams limits.
A note on Enterprise costs: Claude Enterprise is priced on a shared token pool — which means costs are tied to consumption, not headcount. For organisations without active usage monitoring, this can become expensive quickly. We help clients assess whether the jump to Enterprise is the right move.
